Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere (or Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain, its French title taken from the mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck’s expression, “a sudden change of scenery.”) is an amazing exhibition at the Fondation Cartier where 10 mathematicians dialogue with 10 artists.
A much welcomed match for an art world in desperate need for alibis. Artists in this exhibition seem to look at mathematicians and their relationship to their work with a certain infatuation. Or maybe it was just me.
If you search carefully you’ll find this note left by David Lynch (one of the participating artists) that, to me, encapsulates the exhibition in one simple (hidden) gesture.
